#felizcumpleaños Lucero aka ‘Potranco’

#felizcumpleaños Lucero aka ‘Potranco’ ~ 1 year old today!

And, in case you were wondering, ‘Potranco’ is not really a word. A female young horse is a potranca. A male young horse is a potrillo. But this year amongst the new births we had almost all potrancas.

Gracias!

We often get asked - “Do you rescue horses?” The reality is, we have, in fact, ‘rescued’ a number of horses, for various reasons. One horse, Luna, was a legit rescue, from near starvation, where she was basically abandoned. But the rest have been for a variety of less intense reasons - a friend who could no longer afford to keep his mare, so we took her in (Flicka). Or another friend whose mare was having problems walking and needed a change of terrain (Xochitl). In all we have actually taken in over a dozen horses for one reason or another, finding homes for some, and giving a home to the others.

But, when people ask that question my go to answer is, “No, we don’t rescue horses - we rescue young men.”

Trabajando con Zarco

People often ask us how long it takes us to train our horses. “These horses are so well trained - how do you do it?”

Well, we begin with patience and consistency. Slowly, poco a poco, getting them used to being handled, having a saddle, wearing a bit, as well as taking them out ‘for a ride’ (with no rider) so that they can begin to learn the terrain, get comfortable with the sights and smells and sounds they will one day encounter with a rider.

Horsemanship demands truth

“Horsemanship demands truth. Nothing less. We can’t hide much from a horse. He sees through us with disarming candor and directness. But no matter what we reveal about ourselves - carelessness, impatience, self-centeredness - a horse will forgive it, let it go, and move on.”

Are you ready to experience that?

Come for a ride, leave with a dog!

A couple of months ago someone dumped two very cute young dogs along the highway. The local community took them in - getting them fixed, getting their shots, and providing them food while hoping to find them a home. Their wandering area happened to be near the trails we pass by along our rides.

Cabalgata: A Journey of Freedom and Connection

Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Do you feel it? A sense of familiarity tinged with distance. It's the aroma of boundless expanses, something that resonates within you, yet remains elusive amidst the daily hustle of navigating traffic, toiling in front of screens, chauffeuring kids from one activity to another. This aroma, like a faint whisper, reminds you of something profound that stirs within.

It's the wildness, the liberation - that sense of feeling free, untethered, expansive. It's not about your 9 to 5 grind but about connecting with your authentic self, with what truly matters. As you immerse yourself in this vision, a rhythmic sound punctuates the moment – the symphony of hooves.

Hundreds of them.
